Oh!GG – Girls’ Generation IS BACK !
And hey, what a comeback from Oh!GG. WHAT A COMEBACK!!
A little bit of history
Girls’ Generation (소녀시대), also known as SNSD is a group formed by SM Entertainment back in 2007. The group is currently composed of five members: Sunny, Taeyeon, Yoona, Yuri and Hyoyeon under the name Oh!GG and it’s actually a sub-unit of the initial one.
Originally, the group was meant to be a nine members group, formed by Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, Seohyunand and Jessica. Jessica departed from the group in September 2014, with Tiffany, Sooyoung and Seohyun ending their contracts with SM Entertainment and also leaving the group in October 2017.
They are the first Asian girl group to achieve five music videos with over 100 million views on YouTube: “Gee”, “I Got a Boy”, “The Boys”, “Mr. Taxi”, and “Oh!” and also the first non-Japanese group to top-up the Japan’s charts, having three number one albums in Oricon Album Charts.
Girls’ Generation has been regarded as a prominent figure in South Korean culture and they are credited as the lead female group that shifted the public’s focus back to female idols, after the Korean music industry experienced an influx of male idol groups from 2002 to 2007. ABC even referred to them in the program “Nightlife”, as the “hottest act of K-pop”.
Their immense popularity in South Korea has earned the group the titles “The Nation’s Singers” (국민가수; Gukmin gasu) and “The Nation’s Girl Group” (국민걸그룹; gukmin geolgeurup).
The group influenced too many K-pop girl groups to name here now, and it is one of the best-sellings artists in South-Korea having as of 2017, over 72 million digital sales, plus over 7.2 million physical sales.
A recipe for success, the group is well-known and loved worldwide, being praised by many international outlets like The Guardian, CNN, Mashable, Financial Times, Nikkei Business, USA Today and many other.
The current group composition, which is in fact a sub-group of original Girls’ Generation, has been formed by SM Entertainment under the name Oh!GG in August 2018, being the second sub-unit after TTS/TaeTiSeo, which is composed of Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun.
Oh!GG also launched a new reality show called “Girls For Rest“ (the show has english subtitles also). The whole concept of their reality show is based on the requests they made on the last episode of “Channel Soshi”. The show is focused on the girls resting as they document their travels to France. Isn’t that a dream come true? We would love to be paid to rest as well. But rest assured, the girls are well deserving the rest, as they worked so hard to come back with an AMAZING piece of a song.
Oh!GG released their debut single album, Lil’ Touch, on September 5th 2018. With over 12 million views in 24 hours, we expect Lil’ Touch to sky-rocket in the coming weeks, as the anticipation for the group’s comeback reached critical levels right before the single release, helped a lot by the teasers made available by SM Entertainment.
But let’s just listen this amazing piece of dance pop, highlighted by an addictive chorus and with a catchy, decisive bouncy hook, all these being topped-up by the group’s delicious vocals we are so familiar with.
