The story of Shinee – The Story of Light- a bittersweet series which came to an end with the release of their 16-track compilation album, ‘The Story of Light’ Epilogue on September 10.
The boy band- which debuted as a five member group under SM Entertainment in 2008- saw success right after their debut with their smooth R&B dance track 샤이니 ‘누난 너무 예뻐 -Reply (Noona is so Pretty)’ :
Ten years later, the group became known as one of Korean pop’s most innovative artists, consistently releasing hit songs that had the power to reinvent the dance-pop scene (-songs such as Lucifer, Why so serious?, Sherlock , Married to the Music, View and many many more).
And now, as a thank you gift, SHINee has released their latest track “셀 수 없는 (Countless)” with a lovely bow and a promise to stay by their fans as they did in the last 10 years.
‘The Story of Light – Epilogue’ is part of their 10th debut anniversary final album.
Previously, the group released three albums to commemorate their 10th anniversary. Counting “Countless,” SHINee has released 16 songs through “The Story of Light – Epilogue.”
“Countless” is a tropical house R&B track that starts out with an arpeggio riff. The groovy beat matches well with SHINee’s harmony resulting in a peaceful yet catchy melody.
The music video has minimal choreography, very unlike the K-pop band, however, the camera movement and the loopy visuals add value to the theme of “never-ending.”
The music video has already had a huge impact on the fans for more than one reason.
Although released to celebrate the band’s anniversary there are also bittersweet feelings playing in the background as this album is the first after the death of member Jonghyun, who died by suicide in December 2017.
The remaining four members posted handwritten letters to thank fans for supporting them in the last 10 years when they returned to the stage in May 2018.
‘Time has passed so quickly, it’s already our 10th anniversary. We met on May 25, 2008 and now it’s May 25, 2018. We’ve had a lot of memories, both happy and sad, over the last 10 years. I can’t think of anything else to say than truly, “Thank you so much.” So really, thank you so much,’ Minho wrote.
In addition, Key remembered Jonghyun when he posted a photo of SHINee with SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo Man, with the hashtags #10thanniversary #shinee #smt #wishyouwerehere.’
“Countless” is about realizing the incalculable worth of the ones you love — a sentiment that comes through even if you don’t speak Korean.
This album seems therefore to be both a nostalgic reflection on the group’s journey thus far, as well as a light of a hopeful future.
