Tojeongbigyeol: Korea's Most Popular Annual Fortune Guide

Published March 2026 · 8 min read · K-Culture Series

Every Lunar New Year, millions of Koreans turn to the 토정비결 (Tojeongbigyeol) — a 500-year-old fortune book that predicts your year ahead month by month. It's so deeply woven into Korean culture that major newspapers, TV shows, and websites publish Tojeongbigyeol sections annually. But what is it, and how does it actually work?

The Man Behind the Legend: Lee Ji-ham (이지함)

이지함 (Lee Ji-ham, 1517–1578) was a Joseon Dynasty scholar-official also known by his pen name 토정 (Tojeong), meaning "earthen pavilion" — named after the humble mud house where he chose to live despite his noble status. He was famous for his eccentric lifestyle: he gave away his possessions, lived among commoners, and was said to predict natural disasters and political upheavals with uncanny accuracy.

According to legend, Lee Ji-ham distilled complex Saju and I Ching (역경) principles into a simplified system that ordinary people — not just scholars — could use to plan their year. Whether he personally authored the text as it exists today is debated by historians, but the Tojeongbigyeol bearing his name has been Korea's most consulted fortune text for centuries.

How the Calculation Works

Unlike full Saju analysis which requires your exact birth hour, Tojeongbigyeol uses only your lunar birth date (year, month, day). The process involves three steps:

Step 1: Calculate the Upper Number (상궤, Sanggwe)

Derived from your birth year's Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. This represents your overall cosmic energy for the year.

Step 2: Calculate the Middle Number (중궤, Junggwe)

Derived from your birth month's lunar position. This refines your reading with seasonal energy influences.

Step 3: Calculate the Lower Number (하궤, Hagwe)

Derived from your birth day. This adds the final personal detail to your fortune combination.

The three numbers combine into a unique 궤 (gwe, trigram combination) that corresponds to one of the fortune verses in the Tojeongbigyeol text. Each verse covers all 12 months of the year, offering guidance in a poetic, four-character-per-line classical Chinese style.

📖 Example verse translation: "First month, a fish enters the net — unexpected gain arrives without effort. But do not be greedy; hold steady and the blessing will deepen."

Reading Your Tojeongbigyeol Result

Each monthly verse is traditionally graded on a three-tier scale:

Importantly, Tojeongbigyeol is not fatalistic — even "하" months contain advice on how to navigate challenges. The tradition views fortune as energy to work with, not a fixed destiny.

Tojeongbigyeol vs. Full Saju Reading

Most Koreans use both: Tojeongbigyeol for each new year's general outlook, and occasional detailed Saju readings for major life decisions like marriage, career changes, or naming a baby.
